How to find web design clients: check project fit before outreach.
Find businesses that fit the websites you build. Work through one enquiry path, record what you actually saw, and decide whether a conversation is worth starting. Includes a free Excel worksheet and three fictional company decisions.
To find web design clients, define one service and the businesses it suits. Use relevant introductions, partner relationships or targeted company research to find candidates. Check one task a visitor needs to complete on each website. Record the observation, keep budget and project need as unknowns, and ask a specific question before proposing a redesign.
Choose a project you can deliver well.
“We build websites” leaves you evaluating almost every business. Start with a narrower service: help engineering firms explain a measurement service and collect a useful first project enquiry. Your research can now test a specific fit.
- Buyer: an engineering firm serving business customers in a region you can support.
- Deliverable: service pages and an enquiry path, with clear project information.
- Useful experience: a relevant project or demonstration you can show accurately.
- Outside this offer: online stores, dealer portals and custom operational software.
Write the scope before researching firms. The ideal customer profile guide helps you define the business type. Here, the next job is deciding whether a particular website creates a relevant project question.
Use a channel that gives you a relevant introduction.
| Channel | Concrete action | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| Previous clients and professional contacts | Explain the particular project you now offer and ask for a relevant introduction. | Whether the introduced firm has a current project and can choose a supplier. |
| Complementary service partners | Discuss referrals with a copywriter, brand studio or IT provider serving the same firms. | Who owns delivery, communication and the client relationship. |
| Targeted business research | Research one sector and region, then inspect the service and enquiry pages of suitable companies. | Actual website responsibilities, needs and timing. |
| A useful project demonstration | Show the enquiry flow you built and explain the exact problem it addresses. | Whether the reader has that problem. A demo is not a client result. |
Keep the first research batch small enough to inspect every candidate. Record how you found the company. A referral and a researched firm need different opening messages. Choose a broader acquisition channel with the customer acquisition guide.
Follow the path from service to enquiry.
Name the visitor’s job.
For the example offer: understand the measurement service, decide whether it fits the project, and find how to ask a question.
Repeat the route.
Start on the service page. Follow its enquiry link on desktop and mobile. Note the page address, date, device and steps.
Record the result.
Describe what was visible: the link leads to a general contact page, while the required project information is not explained. Do not submit a fake enquiry.
Turn it into a question.
Ask how the firm collects project details today. The website may be supported by a perfectly adequate phone or referral process.
W3C’s form-label guidance explains how labels identify form controls. Its Easy Checks can support an initial keyboard and form review. These checks do not establish full accessibility conformance or a need to buy your services.
Separate what you saw from what you need to ask.
| Record | Example | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Observation | The service page links to a general contact page. No requested project details are visible. | Save the URL, date, device and route so you can repeat the check. |
| Interpretation | A prospective customer might be unsure which project details to include. | Treat this as a hypothesis to discuss. |
| Unknown | Current enquiry process, traffic, lost enquiries, budget and supplier preference. | Ask the responsible person. Do not estimate revenue loss from this observation. |
| Possible project | A clearer service-to-enquiry path. | Propose a scope only after the business confirms the problem and priorities. |
An old visual style, a technical report or your personal preference does not establish buying intent. A working site can support the business well. Look for a question connected to your offer, rather than writing a general criticism of the company.
Continue, hold or exclude for a stated reason.
All names, observations and decisions below are fictional teaching examples. They are not Anivo customers or findings about real websites.
| Fictional company | Known in the example / still unknown | Decision and next action |
|---|---|---|
| Mavi Measurement Engineering | Relevant B2B service. The service page leads to general contact. Current enquiry process and budget are unknown. | Continue: ask what information the firm needs in a first measurement-project enquiry. |
| Doruk Project Consulting | Corporate project pages exist. It is unclear whether the firm owns the website and delivers the service itself. | Hold: clarify the activity and website responsibility before preparing a project proposal. |
| Pazarhane Retail | Consumer products and an online ordering flow. It falls outside the chosen engineering-service offer. | Exclude from this batch: it may suit a different offer, but not this one. |
Continue means a research conversation is worth preparing. It does not mean the company is ready to buy. Hold keeps a candidate visible while you resolve a specific gap. Exclude explains why further work does not suit this brief.
Keep the evidence and decision in one worksheet.
The Excel workbook contains an offer brief, blank company columns and a separately labelled fictional example. Download it without creating an account.
- Write your service, target business and exclusions in Brief.
- In Companies, use one column per candidate. Duplicate a candidate column when you need more space.
- Save the company fit, visitor task, source URL, review date, device, steps and observation.
- Keep interpretation, unknowns, decision, reason and next question separate. Use Continue, Hold or Exclude.
- Review Example for the three fictional decisions. Replace its observations with your own verified checks.
The file is a standalone planning worksheet. It is not an Anivo import format, an accessibility audit or an automatic buying-intent score.

Market brief
“Find engineering firms serving business customers. Our offer is a clearer path from measurement-service information to a first project enquiry. Exclude consumer online stores and dealer portals.”
First message draft
Your measurement-service page led me to the general contact page. What information do you need in the first enquiry about a measurement project? I can share a short example of a clearer enquiry path.
Verify the opening observation on the recipient’s current website. Introduce yourself and your business. This draft has not been sent and does not describe a real client conversation.
Choose the person responsible for the website or business enquiries. Ask about the existing process before suggesting a redesign. If the reply reveals a different priority, change the offer or stop the project discussion. Keep contact and sending requirements for the recipient’s market in your outreach review.
Use software when repeated research needs a connected record.
| Situation | Suitable starting point | What to keep |
|---|---|---|
| A few introductions and an offer you are still testing | Manual checks and the worksheet | Observed facts, questions and conversation notes. |
| Recurring company research for a defined offer | Anivo research, CRM notes and message preparation | Why the company fits and which information still needs checking. |
| Several designers sharing assignments and approvals | A system that supports your shared workflow | Ownership and review controls. Anivo is one user in one local workspace. |
Describe the market.
Write your service, company type, region and exclusions in Anivo. Review the Agent’s research plan and approve it before starting.
Review candidate firms.
Examine the company information and verify the relevant website path yourself. Opportunity signals help you investigate a question.
Keep the decision.
Move a relevant firm into CRM. Record the observation, unknowns and decision in a note. Add the next research or conversation task.
Prepare the message.
Use the verified observation to prepare a draft. Check the person, wording and next question before sending.

Questions about finding web design clients
Practical answers for independent designers and small studios selling websites to businesses.
Where should I start looking for web design clients?
Start with a defined service and a business type you understand. Relevant introductions, complementary partners and targeted company research can each produce candidates. Inspect project fit before writing a proposal.
Can I use this method without a portfolio?
You can research and ask questions, but show your experience accurately. Use a clearly labelled demonstration if you have no client project to show. Do not present a demo as a paid result or testimonial.
Does an outdated website mean a firm needs a redesign?
No. Style alone does not show business need, budget or timing. Follow a relevant visitor task and ask how the firm handles that job today.
What should I record during a website check?
Record the page address, review date, device, visitor task, steps and result. Separate your interpretation from the observed result and keep unresolved questions visible.
Is a quick keyboard and form check an accessibility audit?
No. W3C Easy Checks supports an initial review. A small set of checks does not establish full accessibility conformance. Scope specialist assessment separately when needed.
What do Continue, Hold and Exclude mean?
Continue means prepare a relevant research conversation. Hold means resolve a named information gap first. Exclude means the firm does not fit this offer. None is a buying-intent score.
Can I download the worksheet without Anivo?
Yes. The Excel file is available without signup and contains blank working columns plus a fictional example. You can use it independently.
Does Anivo automatically diagnose a website or win the project?
No. Anivo supports firm research, qualification, notes, tasks and draft preparation. You verify the website observation, confirm the client’s need and decide the project scope.
